The Prepper’s List For Water
This is our prepper’s list of everything you need for your water supply. It includes:
- Bottled water
- Water collection equipment
- Water purification tools
Other than shelter, water is the most important thing for survival. Store as much bottled water as you can at home, and rotate your supplies so that you use the oldest and add new regularly. Make sure you also have water ready to bug out with. Bottled water will only last a limited amount of time, so the ability to collect and purify water from other sources is also important.
A person needs a minimum of 1.5 litres of water per day, more if it is hot or they are active. Buy enough bottled water so that you have at least 1.5 litres per person per day that you plan to need it. Large water bottles intended for water coolers are a great way to buy bottled water in bulk.
Bottled Water Storage
Large water bottles aren’t easy to store, and the plastic can get damaged if you pile too many on top of each other. A rack like this allows you to store 5 bottles vertically, saving a lot of space.
The Sawyer Mini is our favourite water filter. You can use it to filter water from a water source into a bottle, or drink directly with it. It takes very little room in a bug out bag, and we think every prepper should have at least one.
Water Purification Tablets
Water purification tablets contain chemicals that kill water borne micro-organisms. They are easy to use and take up next to no space.
Rainwater Collection System
Take advantage of the rain that falls on your property’s roof by collecting it. It’s easy to set up a simple rainwater collecting system with a water barrel attached to the drainpipe.
Large Water Storage Bag
These large water storage bags are really useful for storing and transporting large quantities of water. You can use them in a bath to store a large quantity of tap water if you know your water supply is likely to be cut off soon. Also use them for transporting water in a wheel barrow.
