Amazon.com recently announced a ban on the sale of certain mylar bags beginning early in August. Mylar bags are commonly used in the prepping community for food storage because they prevent oxygen and moisture getting to the contents.
Although some Mylar bags may still be offered for sale, you might want to stock up now just in case they all disappear!
Which Mylar Bags Are Banned From Sale
The ban doesn’t include all Mylar bags; the ban is limited to multicoloured Mylar bags. Mylar bags that are clear or single coloured are not banned from sale on Amazon. However, with some Mylar bags being banned from sale, it may be that others are automatically removed from sale too.
We believe that the reason for the ban is that small, colourful Mylar bags, such as those pictured here, are often used for selling drugs. In fact, the colourful bags are sometimes used to make the drugs look more appealing to young people.
The small size of these bags makes them ideal for that purpose. They are often also advertised as being “smell proof”, or in other words able to prevent dogs from detecting illegal contents.
The small, colourful Mylar bags are generally not used by preppers, as larger Mylar bags, which are usually a single colour, are more useful for food storage. The Amazon ban does not currently extend to these single colour bags, but sellers may being to limit their sales if Amazon makes Mylar bags difficult to sell. Although it’s unlikely the plain Mylar bags will be banned, it may be a good time to add some more to your stock if you use Amazon.
Is Amazon Banning The Sale Of Mylar Bags Worldwide?
The ban on the sale of Mylar bags currently appears to be on Amazon.com only, and so affecting the US. Amazon.co.uk and other non-US versions of Amazon’s website have not announced the ban, and so may be unaffected. The announcement on Amazon.com seller central refers to unspecified “regulatory requirements”, implying that this is a nation specific ban rather than worldwide. We will know more after the ban commences on 5 August 2022. In the meantime, consider buying some Mylar bags!
